PROJECT INFO: Fredericksburg/Medical (Fred-Med)

This page last updated November 27, 2012

Fred-Med location Location: Fredericksburg Rd. at Medical Dr.

Description: This project will grade-separate the Fredericksburg Rd./Medical Dr. intersection in the South Texas Medical Center.  Medical Dr. will be lowered and will run below Fredericksburg, which will be bridged over Medical at its current grade.  Traffic on Medical will then cross under Fredericksburg without having to stop at a signalized intersection.  For motorists on Medical who wish to turn onto Fredericksburg or vice-versa, standard entrance and exit ramps will climb from Medical up to signalized intersections at Fredericksburg.   The project will cost $12.2 million, about $4 million less than budgeted.

How this project will help:  The intent of this project is to reduce congestion, improve safety, and improve emergency vehicle access to the Medical Center.  The new underpass will allow through traffic on Medical Drive to bypass the Fredericksburg intersection.  This will remove the through traffic on Medical from the intersection thus allowing the green light time for Fredericksburg Road to be extended.  These changes will help alliviate the chronic congestion at that intersection for traffic on both roadways.

Timeline: Construction was scheduled to begin on September 17, 2012, but administrative issues with the contractor have delayed the project indefinately.

Current status: Construction is on hold.
