Location:
I-10 West from Ramsgate to Loop 1604
Description:
This project will add one to two main lanes in each
direction. In addition, the existing westbound DeZavala exit ramp
will be closed and moved back to the existing Woodstone exit, which
will be expanded to two lanes. The existing westbound entrance
ramp from Huebner Oaks will be closed; traffic will continue along the
access road to the existing entrance ramp before DeZavala.
Additionally, a new eastbound to westbound turnaround will be
added at UTSA Blvd.
How this
project will help: This section of I-10 experiences recurring
congestion daily due to insufficient capacity and bottlenecks caused by
obsolete ramp arrangements. Additional main lanes will
obviously increase the capacity of the freeway. The addition of
new eastbound lanes at the entrance from Loop 1604 entrance will
eliminate the bottleneck caused by merging traffic there. By
removing the current De Zavala exit and the preceding entrance ramp,
the dangerous and congestion-inducing weaving that takes place on the
mainlanes between those two ramps will be eliminated, thus improving
traffic flow in that area. That change will also eliminate the
weaving and associated congestion on the westbound access road at the
top of the hill approaching De Zavala.
Timeline:
Construction started in early 2012 and is scheduled to be
completed in mid 2015. Click here

NOTE:
This project was delayed due to a
contractor default. Work resumed in April 2013.
