Location:
I-35 from Judson Rd. to FM 3009
Description:
This project will add one
additional main lane in each direction between Loop 1604 and FM 3009
and revise several
ramps. The northbound
I-35 exit to Forum Blvd. will be reconfigured to fly over the traffic
entering I-35 from Loop 1604; this will eliminate the significant
weaving problem there that is a major safety issue and creates
recurring congestion. Turnarounds will be added at FM 3009,
FM
1516, and at Loop 1604 and Lookout Road. Additional auxiliary
lanes will be added southbound between Loop 1604 and Judson Road.
How this
project will help:
This area experiences recurring congestion due to insufficient
capacity and obsolete ramp configurations. The opening of the
Forum has especially exacerbated congestion in the area particularly in
the I-35/Loop 1604 interchange. Additional main lanes
will
obviously increase the capacity of the freeway. Changing the
northbound collector (Forum Pkwy. exit) to fly over the entrance to
I-35 northbound from
Loop 1604 will eliminate the dangerous and congestion-inducing weaving
that takes place there.
Instead, northbound I-35 traffic destined for Forum Pkwy. will be
deposited directly onto the access road. The new mainlanes on
either side of the Loop 1604 interchange will help smooth merging in
those areas which should help reduce congestion.
Timeline:
Construction started in October 2012 and is expected to be
complete in Spring 2014.
