San Antonio Area Freeway System
PROJECT INFO: I-37 at SE Military Dr.

This page last updated January 01, 2010

Project locationLocation: I-37 at SE Military Dr.

Description: This project will replace the existing cloverleaf interchange at SE Military Dr. with a standard diamond interchange.  The existing interchange ramps will be removed and new ramps will be constructed on each side of I-37 to meet at two new signalized intersections.  Turnarounds and additional turning lanes will also be added.

Purpose: The existing cloverleaf interchange is in very close proximity to the Goliad intersection on the west and the Glasgow/Pickwell intersection on the east.  This causes traffic from the outer right-turn ramps of the interchange to enter Military with little room to smoothly merge and/or move to the left to make a left turn at those intersections.  Recent growth in that area, especially around the Goliad intersection, has exacerbated this problem.  Converting to a diamond interchange will triple the amount of room on Military for drivers to merge and make any necessary lane changes.  Furthermore, the project will add additional turn lanes, turnarounds, and additional room to store waiting traffic.  This project should significantly improve traffic in the area and improve safety.

Timeline: Construction started in August 2007 and is scheduled to be completed in the 4th quarter of 2009.  Click here for the latest status report on this project.
